There was news yesterday in malaysiakini about the IRD's (Internal Revenue Department or Jabatan Hasil Dalam Negeri) door-to-door campaign. The main goal of this campaign, according the report , is to put a check on errant businessmen and individuals who fail to declare their income annually.
Great show! Personally, I am eagerly awaiting their arrival as I have a few issues to clear up with the IRD. There is an outstanding payment that I have with them. This is an outstanding payment in which they owe me some money. I am really keeping my fingers crossed that they will remember to bring the check to settle this payment with me.
My father has passed away for quite some time now, and the last time the statement for his income tax came, it showed that he had a credit of about over RM200 in the IRD. This meant that he had overpaid. I went to the IRD to enquire what I had to do to get the money back. Suffice to say, the number of the documents I had to produce to secure this small amount of money was enough to make me give up.
I had already produced my birth certificate, identification card and my father's death certificate, so it was be pretty evident that I am his heir. It's still a constant wonder to me why is it so hard to get my money back from the IRD.
This year marks the seventh anniversary of my father's death. It also marks the seventh time I have had to write to IRD informing them of the death of my father! Year after year without fail they will send my father a J-Form for his income tax. I have even gone personally to meet the people in the IRD to inform them that my father had passed away, but the J-Form never ceases to arrive.
Indeed, I find this kind of slip-up very callous to the point of being disrespectful.
