In his letter, ' DAP not practising communitarian politics ', John Chung critised Farish A Noor for "mischievous" allegations against the party. I think Chung is a member or an official of the DAP. I saw his name somewhere once as a contact person for an event organised by the DAP.
It is sad that DAP members still cannot recognise their problem. Only they will deny publicly that DAP is playing communitarian politics. They contest mainly those seats with a Chinese majority. They articulate only Chinese interests. Their top leaders are almost all Chinese, and so are their members. Their main enemies are MCA and Gerakan, two other Chinese-based parties.
Although the DAP seems to be fighting for the rights of non-Muslims when it opposes the PAS idea of an Islamic state, we all know that by non-Muslims, it means the Chinese.
The DAP is so strong in its condemnation of the Islamic state now because it is afraid of losing votes among the Chinese in the coming election. Umno and MCA have whipped up a lot of fear among the Chinese by demonising PAS and the Islamic state, and the Chinese voters will vote for the BN as the lesser of the two evils. To save their own skin, DAP leaders must look as if they are more against the Islamic state than the MCA.
Chung concluded that Farish should not be influenced by the views and impressions of those who wish to smear and discredit the DAP. This is very insulting to Farish, who shows his independent critical thinking in all his writings.
Chung's thinking makes people afraid of criticising the DAP, as if the party is perfect. I am also reluctant to criticise the DAP, but I have to ask: what can it do for the Malays and Islam? Does it really care what a Muslim person like me wants?
