PAS' Islamic state document is not something new to those who know PAS, whether Muslim or not. PAS has been championing Islamic state concepts as outlined in its party constitution since the early days.

From my point of view, PAS is just reassuring and re-explaining its ideology in a documented form. Whether it is wise or unwise, I personally think that people who know PAS will know PAS. People who don't know PAS will sooner or later get to know PAS. It is better to be truthful than to deceive.

People who voted for PAS in Kelantan and Terengganu in 1999 know what they are expecting: an Islamic government. The release of the Islamic state document is not something alien or new. It is the same as explained during PAS ceramah and through the media.

As with DAP, PAS can never sacrifice its principles. People who voted for PAS did so because they want to be governed by an Islamic government which they are convinced is fair, just, and better than Barisan Nasional.

People in Kelantan voted for PAS for two consecutive terms. A third win is expected. If the same thing happens in Terengganu in the upcoming election, it is understood that the people are comfortable with a PAS-led government in both states.

Don't forget that PAS is the main opposition force in the country. It held firm in the northern states of Perlis and Kedah. PAS is also maturing in Johor and Selangor.

In 1999, 60 percent of Malay voters voted for Keadilan and PAS. Some analysts say that was due to the Anwar Ibrahim issue, but even today we find Malays almost equally divided between PAS and Umno. This can be seen in both Pendang and Anak Bukit by elections. Its powerful influence over Malaysian politics is undeniable, although it is seen as failing to the way to find a strategy to seize the central government.

I personally think the barrier preventing non-Muslims outside Kelantan and Terengganu from voting for PAS is the issue of Syariah law. Umno has really manipulated the issue to their benefit.

In Nigeria, the law has been practised among Muslims even though the president is Christian. Other non-Muslim governments like Kenya, South Africa and now Canada are making effort to give Muslims their right to practise Syariah law. Why not the Muslims in Kelantan and Terengganu?
