I refer to the letters ' Old racial stereotypes reinforced by TV3 ' and ' Apologise for insensitive ad '.
One of the criteria for determining whether or not TV3 is racist is to study the intent of TV3 when publishing the mentioned advertisement. Only after determining the intent can we conclusively judge whether or not the advertisement was racist. I'm a fairly dark skinned Malaysian, and have watched the said advertisement. I did not find it offensive in anyway. In fact, I found the advertisement extremely funny.
The reason I found it funny is because it is a scene that happens in the homes of many Malaysians. The advertisement poked fun at us. Yes, it also can be construed as racist, but we also cannot deny the fact that many in the older generation would have huge problems if their children dated individuals who were not of the same race/religion as they are. The campaign managers realised this fact and capitalised on it. Assuming racism is not the same as proving racism.
In the absence of any proof that TV3 was indeed racist, I believe that we should give TV3 the benefit of the doubt and laugh the advertisement off. Come on Malaysia, where's that sense of humour when we need it most?
Happy Chinese New Year.
