I'm writing this in order for someone to tell me the official results of the parliamentary constituency I voted in.
The 11th general election may be over but as a voter I'm unable to verify the official result of my constituency. Incumbent Chew Mei Fun won the Petaling Jaya Utara (PJ Utara) parliamentary constituency with an overwhelming majority after defeating her DAP challenger Liu Tian Khiew but the results seemed to contain some mathematical errors.
Initial reports showed Chew garnered 32,422 votes against her challenger's 19,379. However, it also states she had a majority of 15,043, in which I'm sure even a Year 1 student knows that it is mathematically wrong.
As polling hours in Selangor were extended till 7pm, the newspapers were unable to publish most results in the state for its Monday (March 22) edition. As such, I waited till Tuesday (March 23) but even then various publications had contradictory results for the PJ Utara seat. Some had it that Chew had a majority of 13,043 from a voter turnout of 52,420 (including 619 spoilt votes).
Unperturbed, I thought I just needed to wait a few more days to get accurate results on some web sites. I checked on a reliable news website which showed Chew having 32,422 against Liu's 19,379 but with a majority of 15,043.
It also had voter turnout at 52,420 which seemed illogical if you compare it with the majority votes won. Another English daily website had Chew with 32,422 votes as against Liu's 17,379. It reported a majority of 15,043 which made sense but placed voter turnout at 50,420 instead.
Despite the hiccups by the Election Commission (EC), I though they might be more careful in publishing results on their official website. To my surprise, it too had some inaccuracies and better still the results for the 11th general election has been taken off its website as of last week.
As Chew is an MCA member and a winning candidate, I felt I should surf the MCA website for an answer. I was shocked that the MCA website could not satisfy my query as it had Chew pulling in 32,422 to Liu's 19,379 but with a majority of 15,043 votes and 52,420 voter turnout.
I'm stunned that nobody seemed to check simple facts like whether the number of votes won was reflective with the votes the candidates' had obtained. The EC should have a system to verify such results before allowing the media to have the result published in their newspapers and websites. This vagueness was found out in PJ Utara and perhaps others should also carefully check the results in the constituency which they had voted
This may be a small matter and it may be silly for me to split hairs since the incumbent has won overwhelmingly. But for me, voters have the right to get accurate results in any particular constituency just as they have to go through necessary and detailed processes in casting their votes.
The moral of the story is - if simple facts are not pointed out to the EC, how can one expect the EC to overcome the major glitches that dominated the 11th general election? Bear in mind, we don't have to wait another five years for an election. I bet a string of by-elections may just be round the corner.
So, can someone please tell me the results for PJ Utara?
