I am appalled by what was written by News Reader . I am not sure whether he or she is a Muslim or not. Does he really understand the function of muftis? To be a mufti you must be knowledgeable about Islam based on the Quran and Sunnah. So whatever their decision and opinion, it is based on guidelines from these two sources.
In the case of the Sure Heboh carnival, according to them, the event is haram and according to Islamic teachings, Muslims should not be involved in anything that is haram. So the muftis are just fulfilling their obligation by reminding Muslim that the event is haram.
It is not a matter of the muftis imposing their own law. As a Muslim you can choose whether your want to be involved with something that is haram If you chose to do so, you will earn the wrath of God but if you do not you will get His blessings. It is as simple as that.
As Muslims, let us please respect the muftis. If you are non-Muslim, please respect other beliefs and opinions. I agree that it is your right to accept or not accept an opinion, but remember - it is also the right and responsibility of muftis to tell the true teachings of Islam.
Lastly, News Reader mentions that '... we are not going to let these people determine our future, and what is morally right and wrong for us as adults.' My question to him/her then is who should tell us what is morally right or wrong?
If all adults can justify what is morally right or wrong, then everybody is right. Ask the killer, the will say to kill somebody is morally right. Ask the adulterer, he will say extra-marital affairs are morally right. Ask the rapist, they will say rape is morally right. Ask the corrupted, they will say bribery is morally right. Ask Pak Lah, he will say preventing Anwar Ibrahim from having surgery overseas is morally right. Get my point?
We need the opinions of muftis to determine what is morally and religiously right (and wrong) for us. The issue of whether you want to accept the opinion or not is secondary. To go against their opinion is morally and religiously wrong. Let the muftis do their job.
