Push funds for zero tolerance policy on parking

With more and more horrible attitudes of Malaysians being highlighted, it is time for state governments as well as the Housing and Local Government Ministry to increase funding for a zero tolerance policy in enforcing local council laws, especially when it comes to illegal and irresponsible parking habits.

This primarily includes the need for funds to purchase more tow trucks and enforcement action on those who refuse to pay parking tickets and summonses.

At the same time, it would help if the authorities also keep an eye on where the public grouses are centred - most oftentimes on the social media. This would include city-focused citizen groups such as the Shah Alam Residents Facebook group, as well as the aptly named Stupid Parking Idiots.

Among the areas commonly highlighted are Brickfields, Taman Tun Dr Ismail and of course, Shah Alam.

Such a zero tolerance policy is already being done in Mont Kiara, particularly the area surrounding the Publika mixed development. Those familiar with the area have constantly seen the convoy of tow trucks at hourly intervals.

So, why not expand such a policy to the other areas in Kuala Lumpur as well as Selangor?

The truth is, we have far too many cars and far too few parking lots, especially a place such as Taman Tun Dr Ismail. However, the same cannot be said for Brickfields, or even Bangsar, for that matter.

The issue, of course, is laziness and this mental attitude that somehow parking is too expensive, or that walking a distance is too troublesome.

If we insist on having first class infrastructure and goods, to the point of owning a BMW car or a Mercedes, then we should damn well have the proper mentality to park it legally, or even pay for a proper parking lot.

Sadly, judging by the highlights in the social media, there is no such mental evolution, even with this want of moving towards becoming a high-income nation.

If Malaysians cannot, for the life of them, understand this, then it is time both state and federal governments take action and enforce a zero tolerance on this vehicle parking matter.

Roads and sidewalks should not be made into ad hoc parking lots indifferently because it causes traffic issues in this country, where everyone is too dependent on a car. And if it were to become such, then there needs to be permits to do so.

It is high time the state and federal governments take sterner measures to end this "tak apa" mentality among Malaysians. Tow the cars away and make their owners pay for illegal parking.
