It made little sense when they went on a late-night raid to arrest YB Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad. Neither does it seems logical for them to remand him and other social activists.
However, the series of events came to a nonsensical state and complete meltdown when YB Nurul Izzah Anwar, daughter of a politically-persecuted man, mother of two children, and most importantly, an honest Malaysian, was arrested for sedition because of a speech she delivered in the Parliament. Rest assured, it will continually makes no sense as long as Najib Abdul Razak and Umno-Barisan Nasional is the government of the day.
Never mind the fact that international human rights group or organisations are condemning the series of arrests towards YB Nurul Izzah and others. Prime Minister Najib will definitely unleash his absolute silence as long as he could cling on to the very wealth of Putrajaya. He would rather risk the criticism of international groups than having to suffer the wrath of his wife for not travelling around the world, and sweeping all the latest and branded jewelleries.
Welcome to Malaysia, folks!
Najib has indeed outdone his most feared adversary, Dr Mahathir Mohamad, in terms of limiting freedom of expression. By arresting a parliamentarian because of what he/she spoke of in the Parliament, he has deserted the image of a moderate leader that he sought to project all these years in the international scene.
He has also sunk to the lowest by desecrate the sanctity of the parliament, eroding the principle of parliamentary immunity, and setting a dangerous precedent to the whole legislative system of Malaysia.
Furthermore, the inspector-general of police and his entourage have also went amok and descended into nothing but Najib’s loyal servants, dutifully doing the bidding of their political master. The time meant for investigating a crime is actually wasted on scrutinising which opposition politicians or social activist are making a seditious remark in light of the recent political persecution of Anwar Ibrahim.
Instead of protecting and ensuring the safety of every rakyat, they are quasi-scaremongers now by implanting fear into rakyat’s mind and arresting every dissident for as much as raising up their voice. To say the least, they are a modern day Oprichnicki which serves nothing but to perpetuate the tyrannical rule of our prime minister.
This series of political turmoil also comes at a time when Malaysia is facing its most economically fragile state since 1998. The worst performing currency in South-East Asia was exacerbated by the falling oil price which is one of biggest source of government revenue. Additionally, the fiscal performance of Malaysia has never improved since Najib is the Finance Minister.
Yet, when the country is very much economically being challenged, Najib and Umno-Barisan Nasional are still entertaining the thought of a bailout with the rakyat’s money on the what-is-already-a-farce 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
Bold promise
Having said that, Najib made a bold promise few weeks ago saying as long as there are moons and stars, he will continue his fight for the Malays. The only problem with that statement is that the modern definition of a Malay may well encompasses a Chinese, chubby boy who enjoys a lovely grind in nightclubs.
Enter Jho Low. How in the world does he still remain scot-free amazes me, when the Sarawak Report has clear documentation that he has indeed swindled US$700 million from 1MDB. In fact, this are the type of investigation that IGP and his police forces should dig into as a huge amount of public money is involved instead of attempting to muzzle political dissidents.
The Jho Low scandal is clearly an act of injustice in its cruellest manner. The rich and well-connected are enjoying themselves in Las Vegas, emptying bottles of raining crystals, while we have poverty-stricken Kelatanese who are still homeless because of the recent floods.
For that reason, I wanted to take this opportunity to implore all members of Umno-Barisan Nasional, who might still possess a little bit of morality inside of them, to stand accountable and do the right thing, not just for the poor and helpless Malays, but for all Malaysians who are utterly disgusted by the 1MDB wrongdoing.
The act of getting another jet when the impending goods and service tax (GST) is just a few months away is also a big slap in the rakyat’s face.
The prime minister–cum–finance minister could have tightened his belt to gain some political mileage and project an image of the prime minister being indeed with the rakyat, but obviously he think money is better spent by getting another jet while letting the rakyat suffer under the GST-led inflationary pressure of daily goods.
Lastly, while historians are still struggling to find a title for Najib, the rakyat are already hugely dissastisfied with his performance, particularly with his handling of 1MDB.
And it might just be true that the longer he stays on, the higher the chances he will be remembered as the Bapa who has single-handedly caused the downfall of Umno-Barisan Nasional. Therefore, it’s better for Najib to salvage any reputation he has left and kindly step down as prime minister rather than dragging down this lovely country with him just so he could rule over it a bit longer.
