Of late all over Malaysia there is the rise of the skirt police. Even tourists in Malaysia are not spared at KLIA. If this is the way to promote ‘Truly Asia’ and tourism in Malaysia, then perhaps the tourism minister should confine his promotion of Malaysia to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and other Arab states.

This is not just a matter of dress code. This is obviously an imposing of Islamic values onto non-Muslims in Malaysia as the dress code is obviously an attempt to ensure Malaysians of all races to cover the aurat (intimate parts).

Malaysia is going through a crises of unbelievable proportions. The government of Malaysia has been accused of misappropriating funds of up to RM40 over billion. To date the government has given no tangible explanation or proof of the whereabouts of these monies.

The Najib Abdul Razak administration is facing a credibility crisis and its integrity is questioned not just by opposition leaders but by their own party elders. Foreign fund managers have lost confidence in the market and the currency which has lost almost 20 percent of its value.

We have indications of impropriety in Mara’s purchase of property in Australia. We have all heard of stories of corruption at all levels of police, state and federal administrations from the lowest rank and file to the highest directors. When it comes to earning a quick buck through under-the-table means, there is no blinking a second time or thinking twice.

Yet, we as a nation are so concern with the length of the skirts, whether a Chinese lady would wear a headscarf or whether the men’s shorts are long enough. Apart from the skirt police, we also have the social media police regulated by none other than the inspector-general of police (IGP) himself. We are watched for what we say, how we say it and why we say it.

In the government’s  attempt to divert attention from the real issues which has little to do with the externals, the rakyat is shackled and our freedoms trampled upon. Instead we must unite together to ensure high level of integrity and display of character by our elected officials and leaders of the country.

Forget the externals like the level of our skirts and shorts. Instead we should ask where is the money? How much is he paid for a service? Was there any hint of corruption and graft? Was he lying? These are questions which have to do with the character of an individual and these are what is truly important.
