Kelantan71 advises PAS to be wary of Anwar Ibrahim, the crux of his argument being Anwar's appeal to PAS to drop their Islamic state ambitions.
If the recent general election is a reliable indicator, Anwar's advice is good since a big majority of Muslims in this country do not support PAS' aspirations or its methods - apparently even in the Malay heartland.
If one were to second guess Anwar, I believe that he was merely advocating a temporary diversion around this PAS objective.
Every Muslim worth his salt as it were, must strive and pave the way for an Islamic state in Malaysia. What form it will take and whether such a state is practicable in a multi-racial Malaysia is indeed, the six-million dollar question.
Our former prime minister, Dr Mahathir Mohamad, partly recognizsng this fact, arrived at a novel solution by declaring Malaysia already an Islamic state which, of course, did not get him even to first base with many right thinking Muslims here.
Turning Malaysia into an acceptable Islamic state may not be possible nor practicable now and there the matter should rest for the time being. It does not mean that as a Muslim, one should stop aspiring and working towards it. It may take generations and it may not happen at all.
Ultimately it is the will of the majority and it is the duty of our leaders to shape and influence our decisions rather than stuffing it down our throats, like PAS is seen to have been trying to do.
Be grateful for the fact that most Malaysians are happy to be living in a Muslim country and work your way up PAS. I wish you well.
