In reply to Ushiv's letter, Allow marriage without religious compulsion , I would like to point out that - generally speaking - Islam forbids interreligious marriages.

I am surprised that Ushiv is not aware of this Islamic ruling despite being a Malaysian. What bothers me so much is the blame which is heaped on Umno - despite the fact that it is an Islamic ruling that is responsible.

I do not believe that PAS will do away with this Islamic practices and neither can the DAP afford to ignore Islamic practices among Malay-Muslims. So why blame Umno for an Islamic ruling that it has no control over?

It makes no sense. Perhaps non-Muslim Malaysians should make an effort to understand contemporary Muslim practices and vice versa. Racial and religious harmony entails that Muslims and non-Muslims ought to be sensitive towards each other's religious and cultural practices.
