Mister Tambourine's suggestion that Muslims should walk out on their faith officially is not really the answer to the problem of overzealous religious enforcement.

Please get it right at the outset - once you are a Muslim you will always be a Muslim and you will die as a Muslim. You do not have the choice of opting out of the religion. The clause pertaining to freedom of religion in the Malaysian Constitution does not apply to Muslims or Muslim converts.

With so many cases of conversion, attempted renunciation of the religion has been met with a barrage of threats of apostasy charges and what not. The courts also decided in the custody case for a child of a Muslim convert and his Hindu wife that the care and control may be given to the mother.

But she was sternly warned by the judge that if she is caught bringing up the child the Hindu way, the court may reverse his decision and grant custody to the father. You go figure this judicial decision and how it is going to be implemented.

The conclusion however, is that the child is already by court decree, a Muslim.

What happened at the nightclub should not come as a surprise to the general Muslim public in Kuala Lumpur. The Jawi boys were just doing their job to keep the sanctity and moral conduct of Muslim youth in check.

Seriously, if a non-Muslim couple holding hands around the KLCC park is considered indecent conduct and an offence in the eyes of City Hall enforcement officer, can you imagine what the Jawi officers would do to you if you are a Muslim engaging in 'indecent acts'?

Go to Genting Highlands casino and you can clearly see the caveat placed outside the casino barring all Muslims from entering and a reminder that gambling is an offence under the religion. On the other hand, if these Jawi officers have nothing better to do, they should go hang around any Sports Toto or Magnum 4D gaming outlet. I am quite sure they will be fully occupied.

The problem in our country is the system and the double standards. Like members of royalty who are not subject to Jawi's enforcement efforts. You can rage till the cows come home but nothing will be done to Jawi or the officers who carried out that raid. They can complain to the deputy minister and ministers and to the NGOs, either local or overseas, but don't expect things to change.

The only thing I suppose Muslims can do if they wish to go to a nightclub is to please make sure the outlets' 'tontos' are on duty to forewarn patrons of any raids by Jawi.
