I would like to comment on your article ‘Gerakan man urges Umno MPs not to support Hadi’s bill’.

Let me start by giving some brief history on Gerakan and the hudud bill.

Early last year, Gerakan had started a legal suit against Kelantan state government over the state’s proposed Syariah Enactment which will pave the way for hudud laws in the state. The Gerakan legal team’s case was rejected by the High Court on the grounds that the case was premature. The Court of Appeal also dismissed their appeal on the same grounds.

Technically, Gerakan’s legal team filed the case before the Syariah Enactment became law. Rightfully, the court rejected their case. I am not sure whether the case was a publicity stunt or not. But Gerakan’s legal team has really done a mess in the case in terms of the law.

This was a case of public importance but Gerakan failed to perform and handle the case properly.
Personally, I felt extremely disappointed with Gerakan over this. It was a let-down and betrayal of the people.

Some of my friends are of the view that Gerakan purposely sent an inexperienced legal team to handle the case.

To make matters worse, Gerakan promised to refile the case after the dismissal of the appeal. Until today, Gerakan had not filed any fresh case on the matter.

Now, PAS president Hadi Awang will be filing his bill to pave the way for the implementation of hudud in Malaysia.

From the news, I understand it will be Item 4 in the current Parliament session.

Logically, this will not be tabled unless with the consent of the speaker. As we know, the speaker is endorsed by Umno and BN. So, did Gerakan make any noise on this?

Why didn’t their president, Mah Siew Keong. or their Simpang Renggam MP, Liang Teck Meng, object to this?

Will they vote against the bill in Parliament?

It is such a shame that today, Gerakan choose to issue a rhetorical statement urging Umno to vote against the bill. For a fact, they know Umno supports the bill. I think Malaysians are tired of rhetoric.

I would not have been so agitated if not for the rhetorical statement by Gerakan. This is all a political show.

If you are serious about it, at least get your president, Mah Siew Keong, to issue the statement.

Don’t send a low-level leader to make the statement. We know that when Umno is upset, Gerakan will just say it is a statement by the deputy Youth chief Andy Yong and not endorsed by the Youth. Where is the Youth chief, Tan Keng Liang? Hiding?

At this moment, I think Gerakan should file a fresh legal case to redeem their integrity over this matter.

If they are sincere, please get a good legal team to handle the case. Make sure they handle the case properly this time and don’t let it be dismissed due to blunders.

So, this is a challenge to Gerakan. Can Gerakan do it or continue be subservient to Umno?

Don’t just blame Umno when you are part of the BN coalition. Prove to the people your sincerity.
