Needles for addicts: Govt wasting our money
I wholly disagree with the government's decision to give out clean needles and condoms to drug addicts. If addicts have enough money to spend on drugs, they can certainly afford their own condoms.
I don't see why hardworking taxpayers should be buying these condoms for them. If the government is serious about stemming Aids, why not give free condoms to every citizen? That way, everyone can be protected, not just drug users.
I also don't see why I should supply drug users with free needles. If they can pay for their own drugs, they can jolly well pay for their own needles. Make it available at pharmacies and hospitals, but let them pay for it - not me.
The government is in effect giving out the message that: 'Doing drugs is fine as long as you do it safely. In fact, we will punish those who don't take drugs by making them pay for drug users, so that they can live longer and do more drugs.'
I don't mind if the government spends my money on educating drug addicts about the dangers of sharing needles and of having unprotected sex. I don't mind if the government spends my money to set up lots of clinics to help drug users quit.
But I draw the line at the government spending my money to facilitate drug users taking more drugs. If drug users know the dangers and still want to go ahead, fine. But don't make taxpayers pay for it.
