Pornography has to be eradicated, feels the government. All citizens should support this move for the sake of our citizens and, in particular, the growing children. Exposure to explicit pornographic materials with perverse intent could lead to unruly behaviour among youngsters as well as adults.

But how about our media in general? The media, too, should also play a role in not intently highlighting graphic descriptions of events leading to rape, incest and other sexual deviations.

Of late, despite the vigorous publicity and heavy penalties imposed on those who have committed deviant sexual practices in our society, we see more of the same. What could the reason be?

Richard von Krafft-Ebing in his book on sexual deviance Psychopathia sexualis (1999) has explicitly described how the human mind operates in the deviant acts of homosexuality, fetishes and masochism.

In a way, he has shed new light on why and how human beings deviate from the norms of normal sexual behaviour. The lurid illustrations and the scientific analysis of psychopathic sexual practices and their explicitness should be of interest to doctors, lawyers and psychologists the trained minds.

Vibrancy of this nature to the ordinary minds can exacerbate the negative fantasies they have on sex. To the laymen, the sexual perspective can be entirely different. The explicit interrogation, illustration and exposure of sexual acts and their forms of deviance can do a lot of harm to untrained, unempirical and irrational minds.

It is important to note that the nature and frequency of ordinary men's and women's sexual fantasies are complex depending on salience of visual images and graphic presentations, touching, context, emotion, partner variety, partner response and so forth.

This only implies that there exists a profound diversity in the way people behave when it comes to sexual acts, thus making it too intricate for anyone to foretell.

The media, therefore, perhaps could be more considerate so as not to be too garish in describing the acts and behaviour of 'sexual deviants' for public consumption via press reports. If this goes unrestrained, it will indefinitely dent the minds of the guiltless and influence some others into those same unwarranted acts.
