Recently I went to book a house at a housing scheme on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur. The developer showed me a brochure which said bumiputera purchasers are accorded a certain discount while non-bumiputeras do not get that discount. I was really flabbergasted.

If this discount is given to poor bumis, I have no qualms over it but there are also poor non-bumis. Why such a blatant discrimination? Of course, I do not blame the developer as he explained to me that this is a government policy.

I would have expected the other component parties like MCA, MIC and the Gerakan to have taken up this issue but maybe they are too preoccupied with their own money politics to save their own skin. So much for their talk of 'consensus'.

I think this housing discounts matter has gone on for far too long and I think it is time to take this matter to the courts. I wouldn't mind being the first person to take on this matter as a matter of principle. Let it be a test case as it is clearly unconstitutional for non-bumis to be relegated to second-class citizens.

Unless we decide to take the bull by the horns, I see no light or hope. Trusting the political leaders to do something for us has been the biggest mistake we ever made. What pride is left when you are treated like an ignorant fool by all the grand masters of racial politics in this country?

I would most welcome views and advice from like-minded individuals before I embark on this matter. Enough is enough. It is not a question of winning or losing but of holding my chin up and saying that I am no less of a citizen than others. Enough of hoping that politicians will take care of us. We have to take care of ourselves.
