GE14 - M'sia approaching a historic juncture

LETTER | Rafizi Ramli has responded correctly to well-known regional commentator William Pesek’s mistaken depiction of the coming GE14 as merely a Mahathir-Najib feud, as reported in the Malaysiakini article entitled Rafizi explains why Dr M winning GE14 will chart victory for rakyat.

Toppling Umno will free the Malays from the feudal and racist entrapment perpetrated through decades of Umno’s hegemonic rule.

And that will usher in a new era, when the promised reforms will bring forth the release of the long-suppressed potentials of the nation.

And while Anwar Ibrahim is in prison, Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who is himself a unique magnet for the Umno votes, fills in the void to lead the charge to take Putrajaya.

The battle ahead is not a Mahathir vs Najib Abdul Razak feud as mistakenly depicted by some observers, but a struggle to liberate the nation from the long-entrenched Umno misrule.

In this run up to the imminent election, Malaysia is approaching a historic juncture – either it catches this once-in-a-life-time opportunity to break with the lamentable past, or it continues to muddle in the present quagmire under an obsolete power with no end in sight.”

I also would like to refer to another Malaysiakini report entitled Bersih questions integrity of postal voting for GE14.

In view of the highly questionable integrity of the current postal voting process, as widely experienced in GE13, postal voting must be discarded and replaced by early voting.

And all early votes – whether overseas or domestic – must be counted on the same day, and the entire balloting and counting process supervised by candidates’ representatives at all times.

There is no reason why EC should object to the replacement of postal voting by early voting.

The EC has objected to counting the ballots on the same day on ground that it may influence the pattern of voting on polling day.

However, considering these early votes constituting only a very small proportion of total votes, such minor possible impact, if any, is easily outweighed by the loss of integrity of all the postal votes, if the latter is adopted.
