The media recently profiled the prosecution in Singapore by the authorities there on bloggers who either posted or condoned racist remarks online. I find the move by the island republic to be quite interesting and judicious.
The alleged racist remarks were targeted at a minority group and not at the majority and yet the authorities there acted swiftly to show that any racist comment that may effect race relations would not be tolerated.
In many parts of the world, the authorities tend to come down hard only if racism is directed at the majority race. They quite often ignore attacks and assault on the minority, be it in writing or other forms.
For this, the Singapore government should be applauded and other countries around the world could do well to emulate them. Maybe a 'lawatan sambil belajar' could be arranged to Singapore?
