I refer to your report MPs unite for Parliament shake-up, want PSA back.
That was a historical event in the Malaysian Parliament when for once our MPs from BN and the opposition united for a shake-up to bring back the PSA. I congratulate Backbenchers Club chairperson Shahrir Abdul Samad for leading the charge.
In the last 22 years, I don't remember a single MP from the ruling party who dared to bring up issues in favour of his constituents that were not in agreement with that of our leaders. Over the years, because of this 'fear factor', our Parliament has come to be labelled a rubber stamp.
I hope this small but significant gesture by the MPs in wanting the PSA back will be the beginning of a new era of true parliamentary democracy in our country. The prime minister should encourage this new development so that the bigger issues affecting the people can be debated without fear or favour.
By doing this our MPs will be true 'wakil rakyat' and not 'wakil BN'.
