Nakhoda's brilliant analysis of the Pengkalan Pasir's by-election is a great education for all, whether one is a student of politics or the main actors in our one-sided democratic system.
Indeed, with all the financial and political might that was used by BN, it is pretty pathetic that Umno (despite help from MCA and Gerakan) could only come up with a 134-vote majority.
Accusing fingers must be pointing in all directions now within Umno. Some may point at the Kelantan Umno chief Annuar Musa, who many might think is becoming a real monkey on their back now.
The court case which sent his former ministry's secretary-general to jail must have played a little role in this. During the trial, Annuar's wife was mentioned as a director of the company involved and the Chinese tycoon who should be the main witness in the trial could not be found.
Annuar may claim that he does not need help from Kuala Lumpur because the locals may be put off by this sudden interest in their hardships. They know that Pengkalan Pasir is only a small area in Pasir Mas. Surely the Economic Planning Unit in the Prime Minister's Department cannot set up a special unit for Pasir Mas.
Still, if all the promises made by Deputy Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak are fulfilled, the people of Pengkalan Pasir and Pasir Mas can now look forward to enjoying one of the highest per capita income in the country.
Fingers must also be pointing at Umno deputy youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin who loves to make accusations against PAS but when challenged to a debate will quickly shy away or hide behind Umno youth chief Hishammuddin Hussein's skirt.
Fingers may also be pointing at the Puteri Umno chief Noraini Ahmad, who put on the tudung in Pengkalan Pasir whereas people know that she never wears tudung. And finally, fingers may also be pointing at Umno information chief and former Selangor menteri besar Muhammad Mohd Taib whose leadership record is not too rosy.
