I'm writing this letter to express my opinion on the issue of public transportation in Malaysia. I would make it very brief because I don't want to waste any of our time.
Recently, I remembered back my studying time in the United States, my short but memorable trip to Japan and the few visits I had experienced in Singapore. There are a few things that I kept on comparing between those countries and Malaysia in terms of education, infrastructure, society, people's attitude and some other things. The thing I would really like to mention here is the public transportation.
In the US, besides good highways and freeways for road vehicles, they also have adequate and reasonably priced airline systems with a good but not-so-popular railway system for public transportation. In Japan, the railway, subway, air and road systems are mostly used by public. In Singapore, road and light railway system are the most commonly used. But I can't really see a better alternative for the public road system in Malaysia.
The most frequent public transportation used in Malaysia are buses and taxis which use the highways and main roads. There is no real alternative for this public transportation. Airways are still expensive and inadequate I couldn't even get a flight straight from Melaka to Langkawi. As for the railway system, we don't have enough routes. Why does KTM's Komuter system end at Seremban? Aren't Melaka, Ipoh or Johor Bahru big cities?
Usually, an industrialised country has good alternatives for public transportation methods to avoid any congestion or a high concentration on one system of transportation. I have observed the highways in Malaysia and I believe almost 70 to 80 percent of public transportation is concentrated on our road system. We can't really moan about the high frequency of road accidents since we focus too much on the road system itself, making it really congested.
Just imagine if Melaka, Kuala Lumpur or Ipoh is connected to KL Sentral by a railway system or more specifically, KTM's Komuter system. Wouldn't it be nice for most citizens to have an alternate and reasonably price transportation system rather than only one main choice?
Honestly besides travelling by car or by bus in Kuala Lumpur, I really love taking the LRT and KTM's Komuter. And I always wonder how nice it would be to travel to major cities in Malaysia in that way by a good, pleasant and fast railway system.
I had the chance of taking a bullet-train (Shikansen) from Tokyo to Niigata in Japan. And from the experience, I really feel that a railway system is very convenient for the public. It is one of the safest transportations, statistically. The duration for travelling would be a plus point so we can always manage our time excellently. It is also good and pleasing alternative for tourists.
