I would like to comment on the 'Know your rights - working with the police' booklet produced by Gerakan's Youth and Wanita wings which was launched recently by Deputy Internal Security Minister Chia Kwang Chai. The 19-page booklet was published in Bahasa Malaysia, English and Mandarin - but not in Tamil.
During the party's national delegates conference in Aug 2005, a booklet entitled 'Gerakan - Reinventing for the 21st century' was distributed to delegates and others by the party. Ironically, the booklet was printed in only two languages, ie English and Mandarin.
Gerakan wants inter alia 'to establish a Bangsa Malaysia that adopts the fine elements from all ethnic cultures as the foundation of the Malaysian culture'' (source: item 4.2(a), Gerakan - Reinventing for the 21st century).
But whenever Gerakan publishes important documents and booklets for its party member or the Malaysian public, it conveniently doesn't print in Tamil and at times in Bahasa Malaysia either. It is blatantly not practising what it preaches.
With the new year, it time for Gerakan to do some soul-searching if it is serious of having or creating a true Bangsa Malaysia in letter and spirit. Gerakan should take heed of this Swiss proverb: "Words are dwarfs, deeds are giants".
