What do Proton, MAS, Pewaja, Renong, Plus, all household Malaysian names, have in common? They are all companies that have posted losses year after year. Plagued by abuse and poor management, these companies have suppliers and contractors linked to politicians or their family members.

Was it not MAS who bought their infamous nasi lemak for a bomb many years ago and now all their cabin food from Sky Chef linked to a relative of government personality. Are there no internal audits of these companies and are there no more executives in Malaysia who are honest and principled enough to work for the good of the shareholders and customers?

Buying paintings that cost RM1.5 million is hardly looking after the interests of the company.

Continued protection of our markets and ensuring that the NEP continues to artificially promote certain businessmen will not help the nation. There is something to be said for hard work and capital which do not come by easily.

It promotes character building and there is a sense of personal pride in seeing a business succeed after sheer sweat and hard work. There is a sense of honesty that I earn as a result of the hard work I put into a business. Nothing comes easy and nobody pays me for no work - unless it's a bribe.

I think there is a need for public accountability and for these semi-private companies to be audited like any other public-listed company.

Out of curiosity, has our Jabatan Hasil Dalam Negeri done an audit of MAS and have they found any improprieties? Again, why does the JHDN look only into small, struggling honest companies when they should be looking at the millions in companies like MAS?
