How stupid is this? On one hand, you recognise that the Islamic Family Law bill, recently tabled and passed by the Dewan Negara, has flaws. Yet, you still pass it? Oh, I forgot, it's to standardise Islamic law.
Silly me. But my other question is why do we want to have a flawed standardised law? The government admits the law is flawed and that's why they agreed to make amendments. But why they want to pass a flawed law in the first place is really beyond me. Please, don't insult my intelligence by arguing that it's for uniformity of Islamic law in Malaysia.
Even if it's amended, it is already a law although now it has been temporarily put on hold. What will the amendments be like? There is no guarantee the amendments will be as what we demand. And when is the proposed date for these amendments to be made known? One year from now? Five years? Taking a cue from the Malaysian way of doing things, it will take forever. And in the meantime, thank you very much, the men can take exploit this flawed law.
Why does this happen? Is it because in our so-called Malay culture, to question back is to 'derhaka', be 'kurang ajar'. 'Apa-apa pun redha je lah'. Or 'ikut je. (diam tanda setuju?)'. Maybe Puteri Umno should have a programme called "Diam tanda tak setuju" to all 'bakal pengantin perempuan'.
I am really disheartened by the lack of attention from the very group which is going to be affected the most by this law, namely Muslim women in Malaysia. Except for Sisters in Islam, Minister Shahrizat Abdul Jalil and a few others, none seem to be interested.
What a shame to notice that objections and concerns are instead being raised by non-Muslim, as if we Muslims have suddenly been affected by some disability to think with our minds.
I am a practicing Muslim, a Malay and a man. I am also a husband and a father of three beautiful daughters. These facts themselves give me a reason enough to voice my objection to this flawed law. It makes me sick.
