I refer to your report Israeli agent in MAS: Azmin reveals all.

The country is facing far more urgent problems that need addressing rather than whether the employment of a former Israeli officer with national carrier was a national security risk.

But politicians, especially those who hope to come to power or stay in the news by using their inbuilt hatred towards the Israelis love to lay such issues for their political agenda, no doubt.

So one did, when he released documents to back his claim that a former Israeli intelligence officer was on the payroll of the national carrier, Malaysia Airlines (MAS) and that the financially-troubled carrier had paid several individuals 'astronomical' salaries monthly.

I have no problem with the complaint about the individuals being paid 'astronomical' salaries monthly, as, it revolves around public interest but to inject some clandestine plan about the employment of the Israeli was stretching one's imagination just too far and aimlessly wide!

For the record, we have Israelis working all over the world, in various sectors such as corporate affairs, investment banking, finance, public policy, advertisements, as spin doctors, lobbyists and as 'advisers' to several governments some of which we still do business and have diplomatic ties with.

But, they are certainly not here nor there for clandestine operations or subversive activities. They are here just on plain business It is about earning a living through sheer hard work and through one's own investments and savings rather than depending racist policies, handouts or by political influence and patronage.

For the record, Deputy Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, who is also the defence minister, reportedly said he was unaware of the situation, but, that the claims would be investigated. I am only too certain that the deputy premier, who is an extremely intelligent man in my books, would have clarified the status by now and I believe his subsequent silence could be because this is a non-issue?

So what were the said documents that were revealed? The man's CV did not attempt to hide anything but revealed that he had served as a lieutenant in the military intelligence unit of Israel's defense forces between 1983 and 1988. There was full disclosure on the applicant's part, who was a French national, and the choice was left to the authorities to employ him or not.

It was a plain business decision but if one wants to see things differently in a flight of fancy, than one could.

If this stereotyping continues, the result would be that we will continue to be bogged down by petty and racists opinions at a time when the country wishes to be an international player and to be taken seriously on the world stage.
