I read with great dismay about the sacking of the editor of the Sarawak Tribune and the questioning of its editor-in-chief by the Internal Security Ministry.

Once again, the Malaysian press is in danger. The sacking of the editors of China Press and Sarawak Tribune goes to show that a change of administration does not mean a change in policy. The threat of the ISA and the Special Branch hang over the freedom of thought and speech of all Malaysians as proven by the harsh indictment of the press in these two incidents by the administration of our new PM.

It is to the credit of Malaysians that we have 'handled' the potentially explosive issue of religion with fair, open and civilised discussion. This illustrates that the Malaysian public is a lot more level-headed than they are credited for. Now, the onus is on the government to not blow the issue out of proportion and create yet another reason for our nation to be divisive.
