I disagree with the letter Islamic governments not necessarily corruption free by Jess. In the last general election, Malay voters were evenly split between PAS and BN in Terengganu. However, non-Muslim voters did overwhelmingly reject PAS thus tilting the balance.
The writer points to accumulation of wealth by Muslim leaders as evidence of massive corruption. However, he is incorrect when he uses Iran as an example because the ruling leaders there actually live modest, humble lifestyles. This is in stark contrast to the lavish lifestyles of secular Muslim leaders such as the Saudi royal family, the Sultan of Brunei and the president of Turkmenistan. (In Turkmenistan, the statues there of their president are actually made from gold and everywhere you go you will see billboards praising their leader's achievements - believe it or not!).
The similarity of these countries is that they are all secular which is why there is a trend towards theocracy and rule by the clergy in Malaysia. (Known as "ustaz" and "ustazah" in Malaysia.)
The writer also questions the decline and demise of the Caliphate. It was not their religion (Islam) which is to blame but rather their lack of understanding of the holy scriptures. The Islamic Empire crumbled as a result of "secularism" as the caliphs spent their days in harems and smoking hashish instead of leading the prayers five times a day as their successful predecessors did.
The writer is quick to praise "moderates". Who are these "moderates"? Are they recognised by their suits and ties? And do they laugh heartily at the cartoons of Muhammad together with their non-Muslim friends? How many of these so-called moderates actually observe the five pillars including praying five times a day, fasting, giving alms to the poor, etc.
These "moderates" can be seen patronising premises where alcohol is served, they dance at discos, are unfaithful to their spouses and treat women like second-class citizens. Worst of all, many of these moderates never attended religious classes and are unable to read the Koran.
Need I remind the writer that it is "secular" Muslims who are responsible for any possible injustices such as in the M Moorthy case, the Ayah Pin case, the demolishing of the Orang Asli church , etc.
Thus, it is unfair to claim that it is better for "Muslim moderates" to govern instead of "Muslim clerics". The people have the right to choose just like the world must recognise Hamas which won the elections in Palestine fair and square.
