I refer to your report Rais: Coops veto 'Last Communist' .

I, too, would like to laud Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Dr. Rais Yatim's proposal for MPs to view the movie, 'Lelaki Komunis Terakhir'. I am reminded of a story related by James Carroll in his book Constantine's Sword.

He was so terrified for his children when they visited Hitler's grave. It was not because that he was afraid of them falling into a hole but more so was because it was 'Hitler's grave', that sadistic Nazi's grave. It was as if one would turn into a sadistic Nazi if one gets too near to the grave. It is laughable but sadly true.

Our minds would be further conditioned and warped if the government thinks for a second that by watching the movie, we would all turn into communists even if the movie glorified Chin Peng (a big 'if' as according to reports, the movie does not glorify him). Give him the benefit of history, untainted. From there, the rakyat are able to discern between what is right and wrong.

We are living in such a harmonious and stable society. Who in the right frame of mind would decide to be a communist? What cause should this new communist be fighting for? I doubt there is any as the communist cause is as good as dead. Look at China now. It is communist in name but capitalist in every sense of the word.

The Chinese are now much happier; less oppressed and able to afford many things compared to Mao Tse Tung's time. It will take a whole lot more than what we Malaysians are purportedly suffering from now (lack of transparency; lack of opposition; lack of meritocracy, to name a few) for us to take up arms again. We would rather resort to civil disobedience and blogging in the comforts of our own homes.

Therefore, it would be good for the powers-that-be to implement proper checks and balances to ensure that the rakyat's threshold is not breached and to win our confidence over by, for example, allowing more freedom of expression.
