It is sad to see Dr Mahathir Mohamad descend into a bottomless pit of frustration and bitterness after having enjoyed 22 years of virtually absolute power.

He has considerable achievements to his credit. His passionate and determined attempt to create a viable and successful modern professional and entrepreneurial class amongst the Malays, the transformation of Malaysia into an industrial and manufacturing country and his passionate and articulate criticism of the domination of the western nations in world and trade affairs, to name some.

Unfortunately his intolerance of opposition and criticism made him a ruthless foe and many paid a heavy price for opposing him or challenging him - the Tunku (Abdul Rahman), Tunku Razaleigh (Hamzah), Musa Hitam, Hussein Onn, Salleh Abas, Wan Sulaiman (Pawanteh), Ahmad Noordin (Zakaria), George Seah and Anwar Ibrahim amongst them. Whatever the outcome of Mahathir's struggle with the current administration it would be good if some healing took place.

Mahathir may have been convinced that what he did was necessary or justified at the time. But now with the benefit of hindsight, and his own experience of things, perhaps Mahathir may want at a personal level to heal some of the wounds he inflicted on some of the above named or their families.

If he could bring himself to do such a thing it would really show the nation that his motivation throughout his life has been for the soul of the nation and that no person is so big and powerful that he cannot seek forgiveness for his mistakes.

If that were to happen we will all be better off. Please show us the way, Tun.
