The Immigration director-general has just announced that the country's permanent residency (PR) policies will be reviewed. What a relief to hear that finally something will be done on this matter. I have given up to deal with the Immigration Department in the recent years and just accept the yearly visa that they will somehow agree to approve for my foreign husband as long as he has employment here.
We have not thought about getting the PR after all the stories that we heard from people who have experienced in dealing with these sort of cases. The cases usually took years to be reviewed and processed and most of the time will eventually be rejected.
The Immigration Department should also re-look at their service when dealing with foreign spouse applications. No doubt, it has improved over the years but it could have been better. Please don't give us that kind of 'stare' when we come and request or renew our application. We are not criminal or beggars.
I remembered during the initial years when we were first married, one of the officers in the Damansara Immigration Department even suspected that we were a 'fake couple'. She said that 'kita memang tak suka layan kes kahwin dan nak apply visa sebab kita orang suspect you orang kahwin main-main'. That was so hurtful, how could she have said that.
It's been seven years now and my husband is still residing here with a spouse programme visa. We hope that with this new policy, the government can outline a more friendly, flexible and unbiased PR programme for foreign spouses and we do not have to hassle and worry about our future.
We love this country and we would want our kids to grow up and be educated here.
