The other morning, as I was driving to work, I heard the comments of the Fomca president on the issue of sugar and its price. He said the decision to make sugar a controlled item and maintaining its current price does not solve the problem of sugar shortage.

He said the government should allow an increase in the price of sugar as in Thailand and Indonesia as it is already selling for RM2.50 per kilo. So he was saying that in order to overcome the sugar shortage due to less production and stockpiling, the best option was to increase the price of sugar.

This is coming from the president of the Federation of Malaysian Consumers Association. How appalling! How could someone representing consumer organisations of the country and who is supposed to fight for and protect the rights of the consumers say such a thing? Isn't he and the organisation which he represents supposed to ensure consumers are not shortchanged or blackmailed by the sellers and producers?

Obviously, the easy way out to overcome the sugar shortage is to increase its price as this will increase supply. This time we do it and next will be the rice supplier, then the flour supplier and so on. The list will never end. And who is promoting it? The consumer organisation at the expense of consumers. With the current price increases in petrol and in costs of living, what a great suggestion by the president of the consumer organisation.

Fomca, for heaven's sake, stop betraying the consumers and work towards protecting their rights. Do not be the mouthpiece for the producers and companies.
