I refer to the letter Teen sex: Time for Khir Toyo to confront reality . While I welcome the writer's concern on the issue, I must say that he has made wrong assumptions based on a misquoted newspaper report.
Allow me to clarify some of the points highlighted in the letter as well as what has been written elsewhere. I feel obliged to rectify the errors because it was Institut Perkembangan Minda (InMind) which commissioned the study so that we could get additional input for our training module development.
I believe the writer formed his opinions based on a tabloid newspaper report which (mis)quoted the Selangor Chief Minister Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo statements during a press conference held in Shah Alam last week. There are three big factual errors in the tabloid's report concerning the matter.
Firstly, the menteri besar never said 'We picked 54 and called them up. They told our officers that they had never had sex and that they are virgins'. As a matter of fact, Dr Mohamad Khir never mentioned that his officer had questioned the respondents.
What happened was that a group of reporters spoke to me after the press conference and I said the percentage contained in the draft report cannot be true because based on the 54 questionnaires in the possession of InMind, all of the respondents said they never had sex.
Kindly take note that InMind - which commissioned the study - assisted the researcher in distributing the questionnaires to the respondents. The 54 questionnaires were in our possession because it contained certain recognisable identity marks. We removed the marks, photocopied the forms and gave them to the researcher.
Secondly, the menteri besar never said that 68 percent of the survey's content were 'lies'. What he said was that if the figures given in the draft were correct, the percentage of respondents who said they lied at least once should be higher than 68 percent.
He argued that a school student would lie to his or her parents if they were to have sex, to steal, gamble or to join a secret society. Dr Mohamad Khir pointed out that the draft report mentioned that more than 95 percent of the respondents said they were involved in these activities.
Thirdly, the tabloid quoted the menteri besar as saying that: 'I have spoken to him (the researcher) and told him to correct it.' I wish to clarify that he did not say this too.
What happened was that after the press conference, a group of reporters spoke to me and I told them that the researcher had telephoned me earlier in the morning and he apologised to me because he spoke to the press before submitting the full report.
If the writer of the above letter mentioned is interested to learn more about the study, I would be very happy to assist and work with him. However, please do not blame someone else based a misquoted newspaper report.
Finally, I wish to mention that despite the noise in the press, I have yet to receive the final report. All I have at the moment is just the draft copy. Therefore, I would like to urge all parties to reserve their judgement until the final report is ready.
The writer is chief executive officer, Institut Perkembangan Minda (InMind).
