I received a letter from Affin Bank to notify us on the new clause that is supposed to be included in the Safe Deposit Box (SDB) agreement. It reads:

'Please be notified that in the event there is any loss, damage or destruction of the contents in the SDB caused by burgrary and/or robbery, flood or any event or circumstances beyond the control of the Bank, the Bank may, subject to the completion of proper claims and forwarding all the relevant documentation to the full satisfaction of the Bank and the Insurance Company concerned, pay up to the maximum sum of RM10,000.00 (Ringgit Malaysia ten thousand) only for any one unit of SDB.'

Questions:

  1. Burglary or robbery? I thought that is one of the main reasons why we rent a safe deposit box from a bank.

  • 'Beyond the control of the bank'? I would think that burglaries and robberies should be well within the control of the bank. Why call it a 'safe deposit' box then?
  • We will be paid 'RM10,000.00 per safe deposit box'. And this only after 'the full satisfaction of the Bank'.
  • Why are we bank customers always at the losing end? What happened to Bank Negara which is supposed to look out for the consumer?
