I refer to malaysiakini report Speaker disallows debate on RM4.6 bil scandal on the bailout of the Port Klang Free Zone. In the last 25 years, so many government financial scandals had surfaced and almost all of them went 'hush hush' with no punitive action against the culprits and the guilty ones.

Hence many politicians became overnight billionaires enriching their families at the same time. They have no sense of responsibility and accountability to the 'rakyat'. Billions of ringgit have been drained out from national coffers for the selfish and greedy needs of these 'vulturous' leaders.

However, we must place in record that, at least, the earlier three prime ministers of this nation had taken steps to punish guilty culprits. Hussein Onn was excellent for integrity and accountability and sent the most popular Malay politician Harun Idris to jail for the Bank Rakyat scandal. Will we ever get a prime minister of Hussein Onn's calibre?

We have to wait and pray only for I don't see one yet though Pak Lah is trying to be one. And financial scandals became more popular during Dr Mahathir Mohamad's regime. Only he knows why.

Citizens must be 'thinking people' to put an end to financial scandals in the future. Come the next election, we must at least empower the opposition with at least at 40 percent of the seats in Parliament and all state assemblies. This will allow for democracy to be effective and efficient in serving the 'rakyat' of their needs.

Can you believe that in this country of immense wealth (of course, in the hands of few), there are a few concerned middle-class people setting up free kitchens for the poor to feed the hungry. There are people scavenging for food from the garbage bins of restaurants especially in the Brickfields, Chow Kit and Sentul areas in Kuala Lumpur. And those who have swindled public funds can sleep peacefully without any prick to their conscience.

So citizens of Malaysia of whatever race or religion, please remember it is 60/40 for the next general election if we want change the course of this nation of ours.
