I refer to the Malaysiakini letter Don't make money at expense of public safety .

I read with great interest about this Supremme Systems Sdn Bhd being awarded the concession by the Transport Ministry to conduct medical checks and drugs tests on commercial and public service transport drivers.

The said company has already advertised in the local dailies inviting those in the medical profession to apply and register to be on its panel of certified doctors.

The whole scenario is nothing but another case of well-connected people forming a company which will act as a 'middleman' to make a fast buck. In this case it's an astronomical amount. I am really disappointed that all the talk about combating corrupt practices and instilling more transparency in government dealings remains mere talk only. Sadly, all this is happening right under the PM's nose.

Even the Auditor-General's Report 2006 is a huge embarrassment to the government. As always, we get the usual knee-jerk responses from those in charge in that a committee will be formed to look into any abuses. The money has been spent and there is no way the government can recover it.

The only recourse is to haul in those responsible and punish them for dereliction of duties and if evidence of corruption is evident, to charge them in court. It is high time the government went after the 'big fish' in their fight against corruption.

Time is of the essence here. We are too familiar with the oft used statement by the ACA that after having conducted a very thorough investigation they found insufficient evidence to formulate a charge against the accused persons. The crooks seems to be miles ahead of the ACA when it comes to covering their tracks.

With the general election looming, the 'rakyat' should know by now what kind of government they want and the type of people they wish to represent them in Parliament and in the state assemblies.

We certainly do not want politicians who are corrupt and those who often touch on race and religion to get ahead - these people should be rejected outright. There are even a few who froth whenever they open their mouth as nothing of substance comes out but crass comments about women. They, too, should be booted out because their behaviour in Parliament is simply disgusting.
