LETTER | Today is already March 5, yet the supply of subsidised local white rice that was announced previously still cannot be seen in supermarkets and grocery stores.

It is raising public concern regarding food security issues and transparency in the management of rice supply.

Based on the enforcement directive letter from the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry dated June 16, 2023, the local white rice price is capped at RM2.60/kg at the retail level.

What is the difference between regular local white rice and the subsidised ones if both are sold at the same price?

If the announced subsidised rice is sold at the set price, who actually benefits, the people or the cartels?

The government needs to answer where the promised 24 million sacks of subsidised local white rice have gone and why RM150 million was allocated for subsidies if the price remains the same as the set price.

Public needs explanation

Therefore, Hulu Langat Bersatu urges the ministry to provide an immediate explanation regarding the lack of transparency in the management of the local white rice supply, where citizens have the right to access accurate information about the availability of its stock.

If there are any weaknesses in management, action must be taken immediately to ensure that food security is not compromised for the sake of the people and the nation.

This issue is not just about transparency and governance but also touches on the welfare of the poor and needy.
