Frankly, the ketuanan thing is a non-issue ([#1] 'Ketuanan Melayu' is historical [/#], Feb 8). The Malays are the majority anyway, so politically they will be dominant. Besides, it is logical that the government extends assistance to the majority who are perceived to be economically lacking in comparison to others.
The only problem, and a big one at that, is that these forms of assistance are extended indiscriminately. If being a Malay means that you have the right to demand any assistance, then the "Malay supremacy" concept appears to come from some feudalistic era. This country will, sooner or later, not be able to afford to keep this up in this global economy.
The alleged cases of government monies being abused under the guise of Bumiputra assistance schemes, as being voiced by certain people, may or may not be true, but I have personally seen university students who, upon receiving government loans or scholarships, will be seen showing off their new cellphones or even motorbikes the next day. This is not ketuanan , this is not even kebajikan (welfare), it is pure extortion. The non-Malays, when they see such exploitation, will be compelled to question the Malays as to what this ketuanan thing is, exactly. The Malays must question such exploitation themselves, as their ketuanan reputation is at stake.
Singaporean leaders have recently mentioned about the progress of Malays over there as compared with ours. Rather than being angry or upset but not really questioning the accuracy of the statistics, our leaders should be galvanised do something for the Malays here. What happened to all the assistance given? Is it not enough or are the allegations by the opposition correct?
We all love our country, if we are to succeed in competing with the world, we need every citizen whether Malay, Chinese, Iban, Kadazan, " Rojak " (mixed racial background), etc., to be efficient and well-adapted. So any group that needs assistance must be assisted. If the Malays need more, then so be it, but please... no exploitation, because we are running out of the cash to fight.
