LETTER | This problem of so-called illegal places of worship exists because of the then-applicable laws and authorities during British colonial days.
It continued through Merdeka, and post formation of Malaysia. It is now 63 years since Malaysia was formed!
What has the government done to overcome this major problem affecting a minority group? Why has this not been resolved in Selangor?
Except for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, all other temples in other states are quite well organised to a good extent!
So, why are the Selangor state authorities not recognising the need for these prayer facilities of the minority communities?
The Selangor authorities have a responsibility to resolve the needs of its citizens and not wield its power just for political reasons.
Unbecoming of PM
The prime minister should be serving all Malaysians. Yet, it appears as though he has come out with a strong statement advocating the use of the power of demolition without clearly specifying any process or procedure to identify which temples would be affected.
He was also silent about communicating the matter with the leaders of minority representation of non-Muslims, such as the Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism (MCCBCHST) or Malaysia Hindu Sangam (MHS).
Bear in mind that since the 1980s, former prime ministers like Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, and Najib Abdul Razak have regularly engaged non-Muslim leaders. Why can’t our current premier do the same?
MCCBCHST and MHS have always maintained peace and harmony during this crucial period. We never encouraged emotional confrontations with the respective authorities but worked together for the betterment of all Malaysians.
It is interesting to note that in most nations, the majority assures fair treatment to the minority.
However, it is shocking that our elected leader is issuing such an ultimatum to all, particularly aimed at a minority.
Let us pray that common sense will prevail soon.
