We refer to the Malaysiakini report 'RM25,000 to retract foul play claim' .

We are deeply concerned over your recent reports about our company’s practices in the Upper Baram region in Sarawak, East Malaysia. We take all allegations seriously and the accusations made in the abovementioned report are without merit.

As you would probably agree, it is in the best interest of all to solicit the views of the parties concerned in this matter including Samling Global. Samling maintains its position as a responsible company operating within the confines of Malaysian law.

Our heightened profile following our public listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2007 has opened us to greater scrutiny, and it makes no sense and is simply not in the company's interest to behave in the way that your report has alleged.

We welcome those with genuine interest to speak first-hand with the many peace-loving villagers living within our forest concession areas. Our vast community efforts over the last few years speak for themselves.

We endeavour to reach out to even more communities in the forest, building harmonious and mutually beneficial relationships over time. This includes Long Kerong village, which for your information does not fall under the Sela'an-Linau Forest Management Unit (FMU) certified under the Malaysian Timber Certification Council scheme.

The writer represents Hill & Knowlton on behalf of Samling Global Ltd.
