James Gomez's article on the various campaigns to turn out responsible citizens gives us a good insight of the Singaporean pysche ([#1] Singapore's plain gain campaign train [/#], March 17). Singaporeans are a well-disciplined lot. Their country is awfully clean. They abide by the many rules to make Singapore a truly 'Garden City'.
But that's only in Singapore.
The moment they cross over to their northern neighbour, many Singaporeans unleash their pent-up primordial ugliness.
They dump plastic bags of rambutan skins, peanut shells and every other rubbish imaginable out of their cars as they cruise along our highways. In the resorts and hotels they patronise over here, some of them are loud, arrogant and condescending as they flash their currency to tell us of their elevated status in life. Heaps of uneaten food, scooped from the buffet lines, are piled on their tables. Half-eaten food is strewn on the tables and floors.
Granted, perhaps, we may not be as clinically clean and tidy as Singapore, but there is no excuse to litter our highways and resorts.
I think it is time for their government to launch a 'Keep your northern neighbour clean' campaign.
