I refer to the Malaysiakini report Auditor: Balkis never submitted accounts .

This fiasco involving the former menteri besar of Selangor’s wife, who had transferred the big sum of RM9.9 million from the association’s coffers to Bakti borders on criminal breach of trust.

We cannot allow wives of political leaders to do things at their own whim and fancy without complying with the laws of this country. These are public funds which were ‘donated’ by companies which had dealings with the state government and one must be accountable for every sen that is spent for public interest.

From press reports, it is noted that wives of the former political leaders in Selangor had used the association’s funds for overseas trips, tagging along with their husbands on a shopping galore. What clause of the association’s constitution allows these wives of state leaders to use public funds for their global trips, one wonders.

External auditors who are supposed to verify the accounts of Balkis are prevented from checking the books. If the same thing had happened with a public-listed company, their top guns would have been hauled up by the authorities. So why the double standards in this matter?

The Attorney-General’s Chambers and the Registrar of Society need to look into this matter seriously as public funds are involved. If there is a travesty of justice, the law should take it course no matter how high one’s position in this country is.

This transfer of public funds might just be the tip of the iceberg. I am sure if the present Selangor state government digs deep enough, more dirt involving public funds spent unnecessarily will be exposed. The culprits whose dirty hands are involved should pay for their misdeeds.

I’m sure the leaders of the states controlled by Pakatan Rakyat have been given dossiers on the misdeeds of the previous state governments although there were attempts by the latter to destroy the evidence by shredding state documents and classified material.

The BN parties still cannot accept he fact that one of the reasons why they lost big in the last polls was because the common people were basically fed up with their leaders treating government funds as their own piggy banks to enrich themselves, their families and their cronies.

On top of this, the rising inflation and abuse of power by the ruling elite have caused the standard of living of the common people to suffer the most. Under the old regime, the economic cake was big enough for all to share but the economic meltdown of the global economy has caused the cake to shrink with the poor and downtrodden suffering the most.

Really, if BN is to survive the next elections, they will need to have new and young leaders who are not tainted with the past. Presently, most of their old hands still want to remain in office but lack credibility in the eyes of the critical public. Political graveyards await those leaders who still want to remain in office after voters have given them the boot in the last polls.
