It was reported in the mainstream media that MCA - which has been synonymous with racial chauvinism and ethnocentrism since its inception - intends shed its partisan stance and intends to care for all races in Malaysia.

What brought about this sudden change of heart? Certainly not concern for their fellow Malaysians or any utilitarian objectives. As it must be obvious to any thinking person such concerns are mooted by pure selfish motives to regain some ground lost after its recent battering at the elections on March 8, 2008.

MCA please take note - we Malaysians are not such simpletons to be hoodwinked. MCA, you have to prove your sincerity first by concrete actions. We suggest you begin with cleaning up your backyard and putting into action multiracial initiatives.

A good place to start would be Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar), Kolej Tunku Abdul Rahman and other private colleges linked to MCA where the flag of Chinese chauvinism flies high and proudly.

This is so particularly in terms of employment policies and student intakes. Applications by non-Chinese lecturers are disregarded, and soon advertisements for those very same post are advertised again.

The same ‘judicious’ policies are employed in the hiring of support staff. A few Malays are employed as an ‘eye wash’ and to satisfy government requirements. Needless to say, the Indians - as is their lot in this country - are given scant regard and mostly employed as security guards, drivers and in the lower clerical positions..

As expected, all heads of departments and sections are Chinese. Is it to be believed that no suitable non-Malay candidates applied or could not be found? Almost 99.5% of their advisory board is Chinese.

Drastic structural and institutional changes in these organisations are necessary if they are to be considered multiracial and truly Malaysian.

Another factor that may worry many Malaysians is the current ‘advisor’ of Utar, Ling Liong Sik. He has been allegedly linked to many mega-scandals such as Transmile and PKFZ to mention a few.

Can a man with such links be associated with institutions which are supposed to not only educate but also equip our younger generations with the right values and morals?

MCA - in their desperate attempt to keep afloat - has declared to be supporters of multiracialism and equality for all Malaysians. A laudable move but is it sincere?
