I would like to add a few more things to the list that Karipuf made in his letter 'Subtle, simple but pivotal means' (June 13).
Whenever people whine or moan about the state of the country or local council, etc, I always wish they would shut up if they don't do anything about it! And as Karipuf said, it applies to any cause we believe in. There are many practical things we can do, and they're things that are not going to get you into trouble!
1) Whenever I come across a traffic light which is not working, I call to report the fault. If the number isn't stated, I call the traffic police. If more people did this, they may get on the case quicker because I'm sure they'd rather we don't call and hassle them.
2) You don't have to join a political party to make your views known (but of course, being a member would be better!). Join as a volunteer, especially during general elections time. They always need people to act as observers at the voting centres so that everything goes smoothly and no dirty tricks are used. You can also help with stapling and hanging up of banners during the pre-election period.
3) Give a donation to the cause you support.
4) Get involved in local community groups, or organise a gotong-royong in your neighbourhood to make your area a nicer place to live in.
5) Subscribe to e-mail mailing lists of the causes you support to be informed of ceramahs and forums, then spread the word to people you know would be interested in such things.
