Avril Lavigne: FT PAS Youth should lighten up

I refer to the call by Federal Territory Pas Youth to ban the upcoming concert by rocker Avril Lavigne.

If I am not mistaken, they had earlier tried to have the organisers cancel the performance of two of Malaysia's popular singers at a recent football match between the Selangor and Singaporean veterans.

But when the Sultan of Selangor heard about it and expressed his disappointment at their actions, they relented in their protest.

I agree with Malaysian Artistes' Association president Freddie Fernandez's comments on these party-poopers. These people think their narrow-minded views are shared by a majority of Malaysians. How pathetic.

The senior leadership in PAS should do some serious soul-searching and keep a tight rein on these self-proclaimed righteous youth leaders before they damage the party's image in the eyes of all moderate and level-thinking Malaysians.

Don't regard the gains made by the party in the March 8 general election as a sign that Malaysians accept their political and religious views.

It was a protest vote against a coalition whose dominant partner had become aloof and corrupted with power thus disregarding the feelings of the people who had given them their support all these years.

I believe Malaysia is a progressive and liberal nation. We can accept foreign concerts in our country provided they adhere by the rules and regulations including no obscene acts on stage and no sudden ‘wardrobe malfunctions’.

Gwen Stefani dressed modestly and yet looked sexy when she performed in Malaysia last year and all her fans had an enjoyable evening with her.

If FT PAS Youth assumes that Malaysian youths share their narrow-mindedness then they have a serious case of misjudgment. Instead of imposing their views on others they should lighten up and enjoy some hedonistic pleasures which they deny themselves.
