ISA a dangerous weapon in the wrong hands

The ISA was first introduced to the then Malaya by the British administration in the fight against the terrorists also dubbed as bandits and communists. The British felt then they needed draconian laws to combat the insurgents; and to use rough tactics, even unfair tactics, where the ends justified the means.

Now, the ISA is continually used to abuse those who are not in the good books of the BN; or who are threats to their continued dominance. Yes, by all means use the ISA to fight against terrorists and insurgents who are a security risk to the democarcy of this nation. In fact, even in the fight against such criminals, there are sufficient laws to nab and charge them in court, provided , of course, there are strong evidences to implicate them.

All fair-minded Malaysians will support the government to the hilt to fight such criminals. But they will never support the absue of such powers to detain and imprison political opponents and NGOs and bloggers who have genuine grievances and who have complained through proper channels. But, when proper channels are shut down, where should they send their issues?

But if there is no sufficient proof, should they be abused using the ISA as a convenient and lazy tool? Be efficient, for after all the prime minister had recently said the police were ‘efficient’ in nabbing some Perak state assembly persons for corruption. Yes, it would be of you used the same law against some BN members who broke the law; but sad, to say, this was not done.

What action was taken against the BN MP for Jasin who told the Customs to ‘close one eye’ concerning some timber imports? Even when this matter was brought up in parliament, the BN Mps refused to voice out. Is there any integrity there, I ask you? Do you not have any shame at all when the whole world knew something was improper?

Another open case was the illegal construction of the ‘Klang mansion’. Because the owner was an Umno man, no action was immediately taken. The prime minister dared not touch it and passed the matter to the menteri besar. The MB the passed it to the Sultan who finally had to take him to task.

And nothing was done against the Penang Umno strongman who used strong words against the Chinese, labelling them as ‘squatters’. And what about the Umno man who tore and stomped on Koh Tsu Koon's photo? Why was the same medicine - the ISA - not applied against these racists?

What was worse was when that the Sin Chew reporter was locked up under the pretext of giving her ‘safety’! This is the most laughable explanation for her detention. Our home minister must be the butt of jokes around the world. Talk sense, not nonsense. Talk something rational, not something irrational.

Have one law for all or have no law at all. You want the law of the jungle? Then have the law of the jungle. No wonder some people take the law into their own hands. Why? Because they do not trust the judicial system anymore.

It is very dangerous to allow the weapon of the ISA to fall into the hands of such people; for it can be abused as what happened during ‘Operation Lallang’. I think it might be a good idea to send such abusers to the same camp and let them taste their own ‘medicine’ for a change of heart.

I would advice Anwar not to abuse his power by using the ISA to take vengeance if he comes to power; an action he is very unlikely to take for he is a true gentleman. Has he not pardoned the former IGP for giving him a black eye? A lesser man would have asked for his pound of flesh.

The stature of a true gentleman is that he does not abuse his power to maintain his political position. You want to fight, fight in the ring with an unbiased referee. And do not punch below the belt. Do it in the open arena and on a level -playing field and let the spectators have a good time!

Yes, if there are criminals who want to harm and destroy the nation, all right-thinking Malaysians will support the government to the hilt because the security of the nation is at stake. Even here, we should use other laws, not the ISA, to bring these criminals to court. If we we do that, our standing in the world will be great and we could stand tall and say to the world that we practice democracy and we do not abuse power.

To put an end to the use of the ISA for some nefarious purposes which have nothing to do with the security of the nation, the safest and best solution is to abolish ISA. The PM should use his remaining four months in power to do the right and honourable thing which is to abolish the ISA.

The PM must not look over his shoulder and wonder what his fellow Umno colleagues would say or do. Why should he care? They can neither say nor do anything to him now. He is not fighting for the Umno presidency.

After all, he is going to say sayonara soon. He might as well shoot the parting shot and say arigato to them all.
