May 13 - poor Malays, Chinese suffered

vox populi small thumbnail The riot was triggered off by the then massive suffering of both the poor Malays and poor Chinese. Who to blame? Not the Malays. Not the Chinese.

On May 13 and national reconciliation

Thomas Lee: I was one month short of my 21st birthday on May 13, 1969, and I will never forget how I was escorted safely home by some Malay men when I had to pass through the Malay section of Lorong Selamat (the Macalister Road end) in Penang on my way home on my Vasper scooter.

One of them even rode pillion on my scooter to ensure I was not attacked.

The riot was not racial. It was the poor Malays being told by Malay politicians that the rich Chinese caused them the economic suffering, and the poor Chinese being told by Chinese politicians that the powerful Malays in government caused them to suffer.

The riot was triggered off by the then massive suffering of both the poor Malays and poor Chinese. Who to blame? Not the Malays. Not the Chinese.

But the happy-go-lucky ‘tidak apa’ government of the day, which didn't have any concrete plans and policies to uplift the quality of life of the poor Malays and poor Chinese.

That's what I believe May 13 was all about. By the way, May 13 is also my wedding anniversary.

On 'Kayveas drove PPP to brink of de-registration'

Kumar Krish: Honestly, who gives a toss? Here we have a younger version of Samy Vellu in the form of Kayveas, equally greedy.

The chances are very slim for PPP members to leave the party, so a de-registration would do justice.

I am sure the founding fathers of PPP would be shocked to know where the party now stands had they been around to see it.

To reveal that there are no financial records since 2002 is simply unacceptable. What happened in the past seven years? How could you run a party for seven years without any financial records?

This suggests corruption to the core. One thing I know for sure, the blame game will start now and escalate in a few more days.

On Parties come and go, MIC is always here

Kumar Krish: Yes, Samy, MIC is always here, useless and defunct nonetheless.

The support for your party has long gone and you could not even live in the past glories of your party simply because those glories came about long before you were at the helm of the leadership.

A disgrace you are to the late John Thivy who founded the party, to VT Sambanthan and not to mention to the Indian community.

It has been more than a year since you and your goons lost the general election. What have you done to date apart from claiming that MIC is the only party that can fight for the rights of Indians in Malaysia?

Absolutely nothing. That's what you are - nothing. Now, before and forever. It's still not to late to retire in peace Samy. Think about it.

On 'Allow child of converts to follow Islam'

Mrs Leo: I think it’s not right to force somebody to accept and follow a religion. It should come from an individual’s heart and mind whether they really want to.

There are many marriages in Malaysia where the man/woman converts to Islam simply because they want to marry their partner. This does not come from their heart but they are forced to do so because they have no other choice.

Do you think these people will practice Islam seriously? Surely no. And due to this, their marriage won't last.

There will be arguments between them on religion. One will condemn and blame the other and the children will suffer.

Let the child mature first and leave it up to him or her to choose the religion. I strongly believe that we should not force a person to convert.

It should come from a person's pure heart so that when they convert, they will practise the religion seriously.

PAS should stop at this. Would they want to convert if I force them to convert to my religion, a non-Muslim one?
