National Union of Bank Employees (NUBE) members from 10 major local and foreign banks in Kuala Lumpur have put up a Dream Team to oust the incumbent branch committee at next months branch elections.

One nominee, who declined to be named, said about six of the banks have nominated the Dream Team to the Kuala Lumpur branch secretary yesterday and today.

According to sources, the majority of the 20 to 30 nominations received thus far seemed to favour the incumbent committee, led by chairperson Toh Seng Hock.

The 12 Dream Team members are from Bank Islam, Citibank, Public Bank, Arab-Malaysian Bank, RHB, Maybank, HSBC, Standard Chartered, Alliance Bank and Bumiputra-Commerce.

Nominations end on Friday, March 1 at 6pm while the final list will be known on March 5 when all nine branches submit their nominations to the NUBE headquarters.

In recent months, a clear split has emerged within the NUBE top leadership, with Camp A led by president Johar Sulaiman and Camp B by its general secretary J Solomon.

This has led to two bitter legal battles between the two leaders, the first a dispute over Solomons sacking which has received a temporary injunction and the other involving libel.

Johar is also vying for the post of vice-president for the private sector in the hotly-contested Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) election on March 6, and the NUBEs split down the middle is expected to affect the outcome.

Fund mismanagement

The Dream Teamis aligned to Solomons Camp B and has popular support from among the KL NUBE branch members totalling some 14,000.

Nominations for 10 delegates per branch to attend the triennial conference in August are also being submitted.

The KL branch committee got dragged into a series of controversies on various allegations of fund mismanagement, which involved or were endorsed by Johars Camp A.

Of the 24 national NUBE executive council members, 13 are the presidents men while the rest are with Camp B.

Some NUBE exco members are upset that the majority rule principle is being taken advantage of by the numerically-superior Camp A with Johars full backing.

When contacted for comment, Toh would only say that nominations have begun coming in.
