The Selangor government today blacklisted the owner and firms involved in the redevelopment of the Jaya supermarket building in Petaling Jaya.

The decision was made by the Selangor Economic Action Council after the collapse of the building which killed seven Indonesian workers on May 28.

The council arrived at the decision following a meeting today chaired by Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.

At the meeting, Abdul Khalid was briefed on the preliminary findings of the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) and the Public Works Institute of Malaysia (Ikram).

blacklisted companies by selangor state govt jaya supermarket collapse 050609 In all, six companies were blacklisted, including the owner and developer Jaya Section Fourteen Sdn Bhd, DP Architects Sdn Bhd, engineering firm Meinhardht (M) Sdn Bhd and project manager DLS Management.

The state government has also directed all local councils to check their records to see if these blacklisted companies are involved in any other development projects in Selangor.

"If they are involved in any other projects, the relevant local councils will have to reassess and closely monitor to ensure the safety measures are met," said Abdul Khalid in a statement today.

The Selangor government has also issued a stop work order on the project last week.

Remaining structure a threat

Abdul Khalid announced today that the stop work order would be extended to allow Ikram to continue its investigations.

Ikram has also been asked to draw up regulations for all future demolition works in Selangor, said the statement from MB's office.

jaya supermarket building collapse 290509 04 The statement also revealed that the MBPJ has yet to receive any explanation or report from the companies involved in the demolition and redevelopment of the collapsed building.

"They have also failed to submit any application to MBPJ to safely demolish the remaining structure of the building.

"Ikram stated in its briefing that the remaining 19-metre structure is threatening the safety of homes and residences nearby," added the statement.

The iconic Jaya supermarket building, located at Section 14 of Petaling Jaya was in the process of being demolished when it collapsed last month, killing seven workers.
