Perak may get two additional seats in Parliament and between seven and nine more seats in the state assembly under an electoral boundary delineation exercise.

A Bernama report quoting sources said today the inevitable increase in the number of constituencies was due to the states population growth in the last decade.

The two new parliamentary seats are expected to be in the respective Ipoh and Taiping districts.

According to the report, the existing East Ipoh and West Ipoh parliamentary constituencies could be combined and then divided into three seats as the population had increased to over 150,000.

The Taiping and Bukit Gantang parliamentary seats could also be combined and then fractioned into three.

In the 1999 general elections, there were 1.159 million eligible voters in Perak

The opposition won three out of Peraks 23 seats in Parliament and eight out of 52 state seats in 1999.

East Ipoh had the highest number of voters at that time with 74,896, followed by Taiping with 72,130 and West Ipoh with 71,355.

The new state seats are expected to be created in the parliamentary constituencies of Teluk Intan, West Ipoh, East Ipoh, Gopeng, Tanjong Malim, Tambun, Kuala Kangsar and Chenderoh.

The last revision of the electoral boundaries took place in 1993.
