Najib as PM: Harakahdaily poll says he has more integrity than others
Readers of an opposition website who last week polled Defence Minister Najib Abdul Razak as their most trusted person to succeed Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, this week attributed their choice to his having more integrity than the other Umno leaders.
According to a Harakahdaily poll, this outstanding quality outweighed his other attributes such as his performance as the defence minister, former education minister, former Umno Youth leader and for possessing the greatness of his late father, Malaysias second premier Tun Abdul Razak Hussein.
This weeks poll followed another one conducted by the PAS online organ which asked who among several Umno leaders were the most likely replacement for Mahathir.
Najib led the previous poll with 2,981 votes, followed by Consumer Affairs Minister Muhyiddin Yassin with 1,279 votes and deputy premier and Home Affairs Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi with 1,245 votes.
Umno supreme council member Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah came at fourth place with 924 votes, followed by Umno vice-president Muhammad Muhammad Taib with 796 votes.
No ulterior motive
The poll came under fire last week from Muhammad, who claimed that it was a deliberate attempt by PAS to create a rift within Umno.
Umno information chief Mustapha Mohamed also called the poll sinister.
When contacted, Harakah chief editor Zulkifli Sulong said the polls were anything but political.
We just wanted to see how Harakah readers felt about these leaders. There is no ulterior motive behind it, Zulkifli said.
He added that in the past, the party organ had also conducted a poll on the PAS Youth leadership.
We just wanted to get feedback from the readers, he said.
